P4, formerly Helix Core, is version control software from Perforce Software, Inc. for large development teams that work with big binary files, such as game studios, film and animation producers, semiconductor designers and automotive engineers. The product is delivered as a server that an organisation installs on its own infrastructure. Perforce also offers P4 Cloud, a vendor-managed service. Proxy and edge servers, code review and digital asset management tools are sold as companion components.
Perforce is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is owned by the US private-equity firms Clearlake Capital and Francisco Partners. For a European organisation, that means US law, including the CLOUD Act, can apply to the vendor regardless of where data sits. Running P4 on your own servers keeps the repositories and source code on infrastructure you control, which reduces dependence on vendor hosting. The vendor's public pages do not say where P4 Cloud data is stored, and the product is proprietary rather than open source, so ask the vendor for data locations and a data processing agreement.
