Productboard: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Productboard is a product management platform. It collects feedback from customers and colleagues, from sources such as support systems, surveys and user research, in one searchable place and links it to feature ideas. Product teams use it for prioritisation and roadmaps. Productboard Spark is an AI agent that helps analyse feedback and turn ideas into specifications. The platform has more than 25 native integrations and an API, and is delivered as SaaS.

Productboard is privately held, was founded by Hubert Palan and Daniel Hejl, and has offices in San Francisco and Prague; its headquarters is in San Francisco. As a US company, it is subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. According to its security page, the services and data run in AWS facilities in the us-east-1 region in the United States. Its subprocessor list also mentions an EU hosting region that is still in beta and not yet covered by the SOC 2 audit. The software is proprietary. European organisations can ask the vendor about the status of that region.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Productboard

Productboard is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Productboard hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Productboard is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Productboard together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
