Restate is a runtime for building resilient applications, workflows and AI agents. Developers write ordinary handlers in their programming language, and the runtime keeps state, queues, timers and calls between services durable, so that a handler resumes from the exact step after a crash, restart or deployment. The open-source server is a single self-contained binary that can run locally, on virtual machines, in Kubernetes or on other container platforms. Restate Cloud offers the same runtime as a managed service.
Restate is developed by a company based in Berlin, Germany. The vendor does not state the legal entity name or the licence of the open-source server, so both should be checked before adoption. No foreign parent company is named there either. The vendor's public pages do not say in which regions Restate Cloud runs. Organisations that self-host keep workflow state and application data on infrastructure of their own choice; for the managed service, regions and data processing terms should be confirmed with the vendor.
