Sanity: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Sanity is a content platform (headless CMS) that stores content as structured data in its Content Lake and exposes it through APIs for web, mobile and AI applications. You define the content schema in code in Sanity Studio, an open-source React application under the MIT licence that you can customise and host yourself or deploy through Sanity. Sanity also offers automation through functions and an AI-based Content Agent. The Content Lake itself is a fully managed service that cannot be installed on your own servers.

Sanity operates through two entities: Sanity US Inc. in San Francisco and Sanity AS in Oslo. The platform runs on Google Cloud, with Belgium as the primary location, and according to its security page customers can choose to store content in the EU/EEA or in the US. Some features rely on US sub-processors, including the AI features and part of the functions infrastructure. European organisations can therefore store content in the EU, but should review the sub-processor list.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Sanity

Sanity is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Sanity hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Sanity is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Sanity together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
