SendGrid: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Twilio SendGrid is an email service with two parts: an Email API and SMTP service for transactional and application email, and Marketing Campaigns for email marketing. It is aimed at developers and marketers who send messages at scale. SendGrid is delivered as SaaS and used through its API, SMTP or a web interface; its products are being brought together under Twilio, of which SendGrid is a part.

SendGrid is owned by Twilio, a company based in San Francisco. Sending through the default global API endpoint processes data outside the EU. For eligible plans (Pro and Premier), Twilio offers an EU data-residency option: you send through an EU subuser, with an EU-based dedicated IP address and the EU endpoint. Sending data, event data (opens, clicks, bounces) and recipient addresses are then primarily processed and stored in the EU, and Twilio states that data leaves the region only on request or for engineering issues. The region therefore has to be configured deliberately.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SendGrid

SendGrid is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

SendGrid hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

SendGrid is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SendGrid together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
