Shotwell is a personal photo manager for the GNOME desktop on Linux. It imports photos and videos from disk or directly from digital cameras and groups them automatically by date, with support for tags, events and folders. It also offers editing tools such as straightening, cropping, rotating, red-eye removal, level and colour adjustments and automatic enhancement, and you can view slideshows and work with RAW files. Photos can be published to services such as Flickr, Piwigo and YouTube. Shotwell is a locally installed desktop application, not a cloud service.
The program was originally written by the Yorba Foundation, is written in Vala with GTK, and is licensed under LGPL-2.1-or-later. The project is maintained through GNOME. Because Shotwell runs locally, your photo library and edits stay on your own device unless you choose to share something with an external service. For a European organisation there is no vendor hosting the data; the jurisdiction of those external publishing services is a separate consideration.
