Snikket is a private messaging service built on the open XMPP protocol, aimed at families, friends, clubs and small organisations. A Snikket instance is run by one person or group, who control who may join by sending invitation links. Separate Snikket instances can communicate with each other, so no single company sits in the middle of all messages.
Snikket is run by the Snikket Community Interest Company, a not-for-profit organisation in England. The app and server source code is public on GitHub. You can host your own instance, following the project's quick-start guide, or use the hosting service the project has offered since March 2024, which charges a fee per instance; the sources do not state in which country hosted instances are located. Self-hosting lets a European organisation choose the server location and keep data under its own control, at the cost of running and maintaining the server.
