Threema is a Swiss-developed messenger offering end-to-end encrypted messages, calls and file sharing. It requires neither a phone number nor an email address; users communicate through a Threema ID. For organisations there are business offerings: Threema Work, Threema OnPrem for running the service on an organisation's own infrastructure, Threema Gateway and Threema Broadcast. The apps are paid apps for mobile and desktop.
Threema is developed in Switzerland, an EFTA country and not an EU member state, and the company states that it runs redundant servers there. According to Threema, ownership passed from Afinum to Comitis Capital, a German investment firm, at the start of 2026. The Android and iOS apps and several other clients are open source under the AGPL-3.0; Threema publishes reproducible builds for Android, which it describes as still experimental, and says it has external security audits carried out. The sources we consulted do not state whether the server code is open source. A European organisation may consider Threema OnPrem to operate the service itself, and should factor Swiss jurisdiction into its data-protection assessment.
