SourceHut: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SourceHut (sr.ht) is a suite of open-source software development tools. It offers Git and Mercurial repository hosting, CI builds on various Linux distributions and BSDs, mailing lists with patch review, ticket tracking, hosted IRC chat, git-driven wikis, paste and static site hosting, and a command-line tool, hut, for managing services and exporting data. Its features work without JavaScript, and it states that it has no tracking, advertising or AI features. It describes itself as being in public alpha. SourceHut is a hosted service at sr.ht, and its documentation also covers deploying the software yourself.

SourceHut gives a registered business address in Hoorn, the Netherlands. According to its June 2024 status update, its infrastructure is in a leased datacenter in Amsterdam on SourceHut-owned hardware, with build capacity supplemented by leased OVH capacity in an unstated location. The source code is free software under the AGPL, BSD and other licences. A European organisation therefore deals with a Dutch operator with its main servers in the Netherlands, and can self-host if it needs full control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SourceHut

SourceHut is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so SourceHut scores best on data residency.

SourceHut is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SourceHut together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
