STACKIT Secrets Manager: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

STACKIT Secrets Manager is a managed key-value store for sensitive data such as passwords and configuration files, keeping secrets separate from source code. You order it through the STACKIT Portal and manage it through a configuration interface and an API. Secrets are versioned, versions can be enabled, disabled or destroyed, and the service logs at the level of the individual secret. It works with HashiCorp Vault tooling: any client compatible with Vault KV version 2 can be used, with userpass and AppRole authentication among the options. STACKIT handles updates and backups.

STACKIT is the cloud of Germany's Schwarz Group and says it is independent of external investors. The service is listed in the EU01 (DE) region. STACKIT states that data is hosted exclusively in Europe and lists C5, ISO 27001 and TÜV SÜD certificates at company level. The service is proprietary rather than open source. For a European organisation it is a managed alternative to operating HashiCorp Vault yourself, under German and European law. The Vault compatibility is limited to KV2 clients.
