Strimzi runs Apache Kafka on Kubernetes through a set of operators that manage Kafka clusters, topics, users, Kafka Connect and MirrorMaker using Kubernetes custom resources. It supports TLS, SCRAM-SHA and OAuth authentication, rack awareness and dedicated nodes for brokers, and it provides an HTTP bridge for client applications. Strimzi is delivered as software that operators install in their own Kubernetes environment and is licensed under the Apache License 2.0, as an open alternative to managed Kafka services.
Strimzi is a CNCF incubating project, so its governance sits with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation under the Linux Foundation. Because the operator runs in the customer's own cluster, the location of data follows the infrastructure the organisation chooses, whether a European data centre or a cloud provider. For a European organisation, the open-source code and the option to run it on European infrastructure are the relevant sovereignty points.
