X1 Search: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

X1 Search is a search product from X1 Discovery for email, chats, attachments, local and cloud files and Microsoft 365 data in a single search. Alongside the edition for personal and business use, X1 Enterprise offers search for eDiscovery and information governance, searching data in place and running targeted collections without moving it. According to X1, the software builds its index locally or on infrastructure that the customer controls.

X1 Discovery, Inc. is a privately held company in Pasadena, California, and is subject to US jurisdiction. In its privacy policy X1 is the data controller and states that it processes and stores information in the United States; the policy also contains a section on GDPR rights for data subjects. The privacy policy does not mention a data processing agreement. Because the search index stays with the customer, exposure is limited to data that X1 itself receives, such as diagnostic data and support requests. For European organisations this matters when assessing data flows to the US.

Why digital sovereignty matters with X1 Search

X1 Search is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

X1 Search runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

X1 Search is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs X1 Search together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
