Zoho Assist: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Zoho Assist is cloud-based remote desktop software for remote support and unattended remote access to PCs, laptops, mobile devices and servers. Technicians can start on-demand sessions by email, SMS or join link, with no download needed on their side for ad hoc sessions. Features include multi-monitor navigation, chat, file transfer, session scheduling, diagnostic tools, cobrowsing with masking of sensitive data, camera sharing, and endpoint management such as patching and software deployment. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and other platforms. The vendor states that session data is encrypted with TLS and 256-bit AES. It is delivered as a web service with apps.

Zoho Corporation is a privately held company operating from India, with offices elsewhere, including in the US and the Netherlands, and the software is not open source. Customer data, session details and logs are stored in the data centre selected at sign-up. Accounts on a zoho.eu address are stored in the EU data centre, although Zoho notes that staff in India may occasionally access EU data for support.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Zoho Assist

Zoho Assist is headquartered in IN, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Zoho Assist hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Zoho Assist is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Zoho Assist together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
