Atolio: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Atolio is an AI-powered enterprise search product that indexes content from workplace applications and answers questions across them. Users get answers that link to the relevant documents, emails, tickets and threads. Connectors cover Office 365, Google Workspace, Slack, Salesforce and Jira, among others. Atolio records each document's access control list at indexing time and checks the requesting user's identity against it at query time, so people only see what they may already access. Customers can bring their own LLM, including OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, AWS Bedrock or self-hosted models such as Llama.

Atolio was founded in 2019 by a team that previously built search infrastructure at Splunk, and works remote-first. According to the vendor, the product runs entirely in the customer's own environment (a VPC, hybrid cloud or on-premises on AWS, Azure, GCP or Red Hat OpenShift). Documents, metadata, embeddings and model outputs stay inside the customer's cloud perimeter, and the vendor has no access to customer data by default. The website does not state where the company is headquartered. The product is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Atolio

Atolio is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Atolio runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Atolio is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Atolio together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
