Crisp: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Crisp is a customer service platform for businesses. It bundles a shared inbox for messages from several channels, a chat widget for websites and apps, a knowledge base, a built-in CRM and support analytics. It also includes AI features such as an AI agent builder, smart replies and a support copilot trained on an organisation's own content. Crisp is delivered as SaaS.

Crisp is operated by Crisp IM SAS, a French company, and describes itself as built from France. According to Crisp's help centre, all product data is stored on servers in the European Union: messaging data in the Netherlands and plugin data in Germany, hosted by DigitalOcean through an EU subsidiary. Crisp also uses relay servers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore to reduce latency; according to Crisp these store only connection logs (IP address, connection time, user agent and source website) and no product data. Crisp says it does not plan to store data outside the EU. The software is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Crisp

Crisp is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Crisp scores best on data residency.

Crisp is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Crisp together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
