Egeria is an open source project for exchanging and governing metadata between tools, repositories and platforms. It provides an open metadata schema, REST APIs, Java and Python clients, and specialist servers that capture, search and synchronise metadata. Organisations use it to connect data catalogues, governance tools and AI workflows without tying their metadata to a single vendor. The software is distributed as Docker images and source code under the Apache-2.0 licence.
The project belongs to LF AI & Data, a foundation hosted by the Linux Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation under US law. Egeria has no vendor-operated cloud, so the operator decides where metadata is stored. For a European organisation this means metadata can remain on its own infrastructure, without depending on a US service provider. The project's governance is nevertheless subject to US foundation law. Egeria is therefore a self-hosted option whose sovereignty depends on how its operator runs it.
