Jami is free communication software for messaging, audio and video calls, group chats, video conferences and screen sharing. It runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android and Android TV, and several devices can be linked to one account. Creating an account requires no personal information. Jami is peer-to-peer: data between users does not pass through a relay server, and users on the same local network can communicate without internet access. According to the website, all communications are end-to-end encrypted with perfect forward secrecy.
Jami is developed by Savoir-faire Linux together with community contributors and released under the GNU GPL version 3 or later. The project presents itself as a GNU project. Because traffic flows directly between users, there is no vendor-operated hosting of message content. Jami does, however, use a centrally administered name server for usernames. For a European organisation this means the source code can be inspected and that use does not depend on a hosted service run by the vendor.
