Movim is a web-based social and chat client for the decentralised XMPP network. It runs as a progressive web app (PWA) and combines chat, group conversations and a federated blogging and news platform. It is aimed at communities, schools and companies that want their own messaging and community environment. You can create an account on a public instance or install Movim yourself, from a release or as a Podman container.
According to the project site, Movim is maintained by a volunteer in France; no company or association is named behind the project. The source code is released under the GNU AGPL v3. Because you run Movim on your own server and connect to other servers through XMPP, your data stays under your own control. Development of end-to-end encrypted video calls was co-funded through NLnet and the NGI Zero Core Fund of the EU's Next Generation Internet programme.
