Openfire is server software for real-time collaboration built on the open XMPP protocol. Organisations use it to run their own server for chat and other real-time communication, to which standard XMPP clients can connect. The software is written in Java and installed on your own servers. The project publishes releases regularly; the latest one listed on its site is a maintenance update from August 2026 that mainly updates third-party libraries.
Openfire is a project of the Ignite Realtime community, which is represented by the Ignite Realtime Foundation, a Dutch stichting with its statutory seat in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. The software is open source under the Apache License 2.0. Because you run Openfire yourself, messages and user data stay on your own infrastructure; the project site lists no hosted service from the makers. Work on authentication (SASL) improvements is co-funded through NGI Zero Core, the NLnet fund backed by the European Commission.
