PostHog: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

PostHog is a product analytics platform. It bundles product analytics, web analytics, session replay and heatmaps, feature flags, experiments, surveys, error tracking and a data warehouse in one product. PostHog is open source: the repository is MIT-licensed, except for the ee directory, which has its own licence. You can use PostHog Cloud, with a choice between an EU and a US region, or host the software yourself using Docker.

According to a company directory, PostHog is based in San Francisco, in the United States. In PostHog Cloud EU, data runs on servers in Frankfurt, which the vendor recommends for GDPR compliance; IP address capture is off by default for new projects there. With self-hosting you control the location yourself and are both data controller and processor, but PostHog provides no support or guarantees for self-hosted installations. The US headquarters remains relevant to the question of which law applies to the cloud service.

Why digital sovereignty matters with PostHog

PostHog is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

PostHog hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

PostHog is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs PostHog together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
