QUESTIONSTAR: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

QUESTIONSTAR is an online survey platform for creating, distributing and analysing questionnaires. It offers more than thirty-six question types, many languages, branching, A/B tests, randomisation, scoring, webhooks, an API and layouts in the organisation's own corporate design. Results can be viewed in a real-time dashboard with crosstabs, filters and statistical tests, and exported to formats including Excel, PDF and SPSS. It is used for HR surveys, customer feedback, citizen participation and academic research. QUESTIONSTAR is a SaaS service.

QUESTIONSTAR is based in Hannover, Germany. According to the vendor, its servers run on its own hardware in IONOS data centres in Germany, with production and backup in separate data centres; IONOS Cloud GmbH is the hosting subprocessor. Static assets are served through an Azure CDN in Frankfurt, and invitations are sent via Twilio SendGrid. The vendor itself is not ISO 27001 certified; only the data centres are. There is no open-source edition or self-hosting option. A data processing agreement is available.

Why digital sovereignty matters with QUESTIONSTAR

QUESTIONSTAR is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so QUESTIONSTAR scores best on data residency.

QUESTIONSTAR is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs QUESTIONSTAR together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
