Roundcube (self-host): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Roundcube Webmail is a browser-based, multilingual IMAP client with an application-like interface. It offers MIME support, an address book with groups and LDAP connectors, folder management, message search, spell checking, threaded message lists, shared IMAP folders with access control, and support for PGP. A plug-in API and skins allow the software to be extended and customised. Roundcube is self-hosted: you download a release or use a Docker image, connect an IMAP server and a database, and provide webmail to your users.

Roundcube is open source under the GPL (version 3 or later). Since November 2023 the project has been part of Nextcloud, a German company, and since August 2024 Nextcloud has also offered commercial support for mail providers under the name Roundcube Enterprise. Because you run the software yourself, you decide where the email data is kept: Roundcube is only the web client in front of your own mail server. This allows an organisation to offer webmail inside the EU without depending on a hosted provider.
