SuiteCRM: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SuiteCRM is an open-source CRM system for sales, marketing and customer service. It offers a shared customer data model with reporting and dashboards, lead capture, opportunity management, quotations, customer segmentation and tools for service requests. Through an open REST API and plugins you can connect it to applications such as Outlook, Xero, Zoom, Gmail and Mautic. SuiteCRM is written in PHP and is a fork of the last open-source release of SugarCRM. You can download it and run it on your own server, or choose SuiteCRM Hosted, a cloud service from the company.

SuiteCRM Ltd, the organisation behind the project, is based in Stirling, Scotland, in the United Kingdom, outside the EU and the EEA. The software is licensed under the AGPL. When self-hosted, a European organisation decides where customer data resides and who can access it, and the jurisdiction of the data depends on the chosen hosting provider. For SuiteCRM Hosted, the website does not state in which region the service runs, which should be verified with the company beforehand.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SuiteCRM

SuiteCRM is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so SuiteCRM scores best on data residency.

SuiteCRM is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SuiteCRM together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
