Amazon Kendra is a managed enterprise search service from Amazon Web Services. It indexes content from multiple structured and unstructured repositories and uses machine learning and natural language processing to return answers, FAQ matches and ranked documents. Kendra can also act as the retrieval layer for generative AI applications that use retrieval-augmented generation. Typical uses are employee search and contact-centre assistants. It is delivered as a fully managed AWS service, used through the AWS console and APIs. According to AWS, Kendra is no longer open to new customers.
Amazon Web Services is part of Amazon.com, Inc., headquartered in the United States, so the service falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Customers choose the AWS Region of an index; Kendra is offered in Europe (Ireland) and Europe (London), among others. AWS publishes a GDPR data processing addendum. A European Region keeps the data in the EU, but legal control remains with a US provider.
