Arcfra: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Arcfra is an enterprise cloud platform that combines virtualisation, Kubernetes, storage, networking, security and operations, so that organisations can run virtual machines, containers and AI workloads on infrastructure they control. Its main product is the Arcfra Enterprise Cloud Platform (AECP), a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) software platform. Related offerings include Arcfra Block Storage and Neutree for AI infrastructure operations. Arcfra positions the platform as a VMware alternative and for disaster recovery, virtual desktops and edge deployments.

Arcfra is headquartered in Singapore. It took over the business and product IP of SmartX outside China in 2024, focuses mainly on Asia-Pacific and has said it is expanding into Europe and America. The vendor describes the platform for use on infrastructure the customer controls rather than as a hosted cloud service, so the location of data follows the customer's own deployment. For a European organisation the supplier is a non-EU company, which is relevant for contracts, support and applicable jurisdiction.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Arcfra

Arcfra is headquartered in SG, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Arcfra runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Arcfra is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Arcfra together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
