Cachet (self-host): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cachet is a status page system for telling customers and stakeholders about downtime, incidents and planned maintenance. It offers branded, responsive status pages, a JSON API for automating incidents, scheduled maintenance and custom metric charts. Cachet is self-hosted: it is a Laravel and PHP application, and version 3 requires PHP 8.3 or later and a database such as MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite.

Cachet is maintained by Alt Three Services Limited, a company registered in England and Wales, and the source code is public on GitHub. The project describes itself as open source and free to self-host. Its licence is a custom Cachet licence rather than a standard open-source licence: it permits commercial use and modification, but not distribution as a standalone product. Because you run the software yourself, you decide where it is hosted, including in the EU, and no customer data needs to reach the maintainer.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cachet (self-host)

Cachet (self-host) is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Cachet (self-host) scores best on data residency.

Cachet (self-host) is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cachet (self-host) together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
