Messenger is an instant messaging service from Meta, designed to keep in touch with people known from Facebook. It supports text messages, photos, videos, audio and files, stickers and reactions, group chats, voice and video calls, and interaction with bots. It is available as mobile apps for Android and iOS and as a web version. Since 2024, users in the European Economic Area can sign up with a Messenger account alone, without a Facebook account.
Messenger is developed and operated by Meta Platforms, an American company headquartered in Menlo Park, California. It is a proprietary service offered only as a hosted consumer product run by Meta, with no self-hosting option. For a European organisation, the American parent means that US access rules such as the CLOUD Act can be relevant to messages and metadata handled by the service, and that business communication over Messenger remains dependent on Meta's own terms, features and account policies.
