FixMyStreet: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

FixMyStreet is open source software for websites where residents report problems in public spaces, such as broken street lights or potholes. Reports are placed on a map and sent to the responsible body; the platform can also be used for other kinds of map-based reports. It is installed as server software and is meant for municipalities, public authorities and civic organisations. Live sites include one run by the City of Zurich and one by a Swedish organisation.

FixMyStreet has been developed since 2007 by mySociety, a charitable company registered in England and Wales. The licence is AGPL-3.0. A wholly owned subsidiary, SocietyWorks Ltd, provides commercial services for local government. Because you can run the software on your own servers, reports and user data stay under your own control. The United Kingdom is outside the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with FixMyStreet

FixMyStreet is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

FixMyStreet hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

FixMyStreet is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs FixMyStreet together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
