GLPI: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

GLPI is open-source software for IT service management (ITSM) and IT asset management. It combines a helpdesk with ticket management, a CMDB for the asset inventory, budget and financial management, and user and group administration. Native inventory, multi-entity support, ITIL compatibility and a marketplace for add-ons extend the core. Organisations can download GLPI and run it themselves, or use GLPI Network Cloud, a hosted offer launched in 2019.

GLPI is published by Teclib, a French company in Paris that has stewarded the project since 2015. Teclib states that the GLPI Network Cloud servers are hosted by OVH in France and that it does not transfer personal data outside the EU, the EEA or countries with equivalent protection unless the customer chooses to. Because the source code is open and the software can be self-hosted, a European organisation can keep data and administration on its own infrastructure or freely choose a hosting provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with GLPI

GLPI is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so GLPI scores best on data residency.

GLPI is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs GLPI together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
