Multiwoven: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Multiwoven is an open-source reverse ETL and data activation platform that syncs data from a data warehouse to business tools, so the warehouse can serve as a customer data platform. The project positions itself as an alternative to Hightouch, Census and RudderStack. You connect sources such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks or PostgreSQL, define models and sync schedules, and send the data to destinations such as Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack or Google Sheets. Multiwoven is licensed under AGPLv3 and designed to be self-hosted, with installation guides for Docker, Helm, AWS EC2 and Azure, among others.

Since May 2024 Multiwoven has been part of AI Squared, a US company whose acquisition announcement was issued from Washington. AI Squared says it will keep developing the open-source version and keep it free to use. Because you run the software on your own infrastructure, you decide where the data resides and who can access it, including in an EU data centre. The US ownership is, however, relevant to the long-term independence of the roadmap.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Multiwoven

Multiwoven is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Multiwoven hosts data outside the EU (self-hosted). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Multiwoven is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Multiwoven together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
