Custobar: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Custobar is a customer data platform for B2C companies, combined with multichannel marketing automation. It targets retailers and e-commerce brands, both online-only and with physical stores. The platform merges online and in-store data into unified customer profiles and offers segmentation (including RFM), AI product recommendations and customer journeys. Messages go out by email, SMS and WhatsApp, and audiences can be synced to Meta and Google Ads. For stores there is a CRM tablet interface and a mobile loyalty card. Integrations cover Shopify, Shopware, Magento, WooCommerce, and POS and ERP systems.

Custobar is a Finnish company. On 31 August 2026 the Nordic martech group Ilkka Oyj acquired Custobar, which continues to operate under its own brand and management. Customer data is stored on servers in Germany (for continental European customers) and Finland (for northern European customers). According to Custobar, it works with first-party data rather than third-party data or cookies. The software is not open source. For a European organisation this means a vendor and an owner within the EU, with data on EU servers.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Custobar

Custobar is headquartered in FI and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Custobar scores best on data residency.

Custobar is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Custobar together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
