Notesnook: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Notesnook is a note-taking app for individuals and teams who want their notes kept encrypted. According to the vendor, notes are encrypted on the device before they sync, so the servers only hold data that is unreadable without the user's key. The app offers tables, checklists, Markdown, linked notes, attachments, reminders and a web clipper, plus a vault protected by a second password. Notesnook runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and in the browser.

Notesnook is operated by Streetwriters (Private) Ltd, whose terms are governed by the laws of Pakistan. The privacy policy states that data is stored on servers in Germany. The clients and the sync server are open source under GPLv3, so the code can be inspected. A self-hosted sync server appears on the public roadmap but is not yet confirmed as available. For a European organisation this means storage inside the EU, combined with a vendor based outside the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Notesnook

Notesnook is headquartered in PK, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Notesnook scores best on data residency.

Notesnook is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Notesnook together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
