Stape: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Stape is a hosted platform for server-side tagging. Its core product is hosting for Google Tag Manager server containers. It also offers gateways for the Meta Conversions API, TikTok Events API and Snapchat Conversions API, a gateway for server-side Google Analytics and Google Ads, and power-ups such as bot filtering and a data store for enrichment. The service is a managed offering, with private clusters and custom SLAs for enterprise customers. The company was founded in 2021 and says on its about page that it is self-funded.

Stape describes its server hosting as global or European and says EU hosting for server-side Google Tag Manager has existed since August 2022. For EU customers, the terms of use are concluded with Stape Europe OÜ, registered in Tallinn, Estonia. The privacy notice, however, names Stape, Inc., registered in Wilmington, Delaware (USA), as controller and allows transfers outside the EU under standard contractual clauses. A European organisation should confirm in writing which entity contracts, which server region is used and where data is processed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Stape

Stape is headquartered in EE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Stape scores best on data residency.

Stape is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Stape together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
