Umami: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Umami is a privacy-focused web and product analytics platform. It shows page views, visitors, referrers, devices and locations, and offers custom events, funnels, retention, journey reports, heatmaps and session replay. According to the vendor, it uses no cookies and stores no personally identifiable information. Umami is available as a managed service (Umami Cloud) or as software you host yourself; it runs on Node.js with Next.js and a PostgreSQL database, for example via Docker.

The source code is on GitHub under the MIT licence. The service is provided by Umami Software, Inc., a US company. For Umami Cloud the company lists subprocessors such as Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare and Vercel (all US) and Hetzner (EU); it does not state where cloud data is located or offer a stated European region choice. Organisations that want to decide data residency and jurisdiction themselves can run Umami on their own infrastructure in the EU. Processing then falls entirely outside the provider's reach, and you keep control over where your analytics data is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Umami

Umami is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Umami hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Umami is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Umami together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
