Matomo Tag Manager is an open-source tag manager that lets non-developers add and manage tracking codes on a website. It supports tags for analytics, conversions, forms, scroll behaviour, custom events and advertising, and offers tag preview, versioning with snapshot restore, multiple environments and an approval step for restricted users. It can replace many separate tracking snippets with one Matomo code. It is released under the GPL v3 or later and runs as part of Matomo, either self-hosted (On-Premise) or in Matomo Cloud, where it is included in the Business plan.
Matomo began in 2007 as Piwik. Matomo Cloud is operated by InnoCraft Ltd, located in Wellington, New Zealand, which works remotely and keeps no corporate offices. According to the Matomo Cloud data processing agreement, the cloud service is hosted by Amazon Web Services in European data centres, primarily Frankfurt, with backups in Dublin. Self-hosting lets an organisation run the tag manager on its own infrastructure and keep all data under its own control, while the cloud option relies on a US infrastructure provider.
