MongooseIM: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MongooseIM is an open-source XMPP server written in Erlang, designed for large instant messaging deployments. Besides standard XMPP clients, it accepts connections over a REST API, server-sent events, WebSocket and BOSH; extension modules cover message archives, group chat, push notifications and presence. The software is distributed as packages, Docker images and Helm charts, so organisations run it on their own infrastructure or in their own cloud.

MongooseIM is developed and maintained by Erlang Solutions Ltd, which is registered with its office in London, England, and is part of the Trifork Group. The software is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 with an OpenSSL exception, so an organisation can inspect, modify and run it itself. Data stays on the infrastructure chosen by the operator. The English registered office is outside the EU, but for self-hosted software this matters less than for a service the provider hosts itself.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MongooseIM

MongooseIM is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

MongooseIM hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

MongooseIM is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MongooseIM together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
