Otobo: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

OTOBO is a web-based, modular service management platform for IT, customer service, HR and facility management teams. It supports IT service management based on ITIL, customer service management with self-service and multi-channel communication, and enterprise service management across internal and external providers. It can be adapted through automation, add-ons and interfaces. OTOBO is a fork of the OTRS Community Edition and is developed by Rother OSS GmbH. The vendor describes it as 100% open source and free of licence costs.

Rother OSS GmbH is a German company; its privacy statement gives an address in Leiblfing. Because OTOBO is open source, organisations can download it and run it on their own infrastructure. Rother OSS also offers consulting, training, support, managed services and migration from OTRS; its managed service includes operation in a German data centre. European organisations can therefore choose between self-hosting and managed hosting in Germany, with the source code open to inspection.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Otobo

Otobo is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Otobo scores best on data residency.

Otobo is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Otobo together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
