Sematext: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Sematext Cloud is an infrastructure monitoring and log management platform. It combines log monitoring, infrastructure monitoring, distributed tracing, user experience (real-user) monitoring and synthetic monitoring in one product. Sematext also provides consulting, training and production support for Elasticsearch, the ELK stack and Apache Solr. According to the vendor, the product is available both as a hosted cloud service and as an on-premises option.

Sematext is based in Brooklyn, New York, and therefore falls under US law. The hosted service has a US and a European region; agents report to the US region by default, and the European region has to be selected deliberately in the agent configuration, which then uses EU receivers. An organisation that wants to keep data in Europe should therefore choose the EU region explicitly. The documentation states that Sematext Cloud itself is a SaaS that you cannot run yourself; the on-premises option runs in your own environment.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Sematext

Sematext is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Sematext hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Sematext is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Sematext together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
