Tinode: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tinode is an open-source instant messaging platform. Its server is written in Go and can run in a cluster, and its client software is licensed under Apache 2.0. Developers can extend it with authentication schemes, database back ends, bots and plugins. It can be self-hosted, or used through the hosted option Tinode Cloud Hosting. For organisations that now use hosted chat APIs such as Sendbird, it is an alternative that can run on their own infrastructure.

Tinode LLC has its address in Reno, Nevada, in the United States, and is therefore subject to US law. Its privacy policy states that personal information may be stored in the European Union, the United States or other countries, on its own servers or those of service providers, and that authorities may access it on a lawful request. The policy contains no GDPR section and no processing agreement. For a European organisation, the practical option is self-hosting on European infrastructure, which keeps the data under the organisation's own control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tinode

Tinode is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Tinode hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Tinode is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tinode together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
