Snowplow: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Snowplow is a behavioural data platform that captures, validates and enriches event-level data and delivers it in real time to the customer's own warehouse, lake or stream. It also offers Snowplow Signals, which makes live behavioural context available to AI agents and personalisation use cases. It is aimed at data, product and engineering teams. Snowplow can be hosted by Snowplow, run as a private managed cloud inside the customer's own AWS, GCP or Azure account, or deployed by the customer using Terraform modules in the self-hosted Community Edition.

Snowplow lists offices in London and Boston; the company is headquartered in the United Kingdom, outside the EU. Since January 2024 the core pipeline components have been released under the Snowplow Limited Use License, which does not permit production deployment without a commercial licence, while the trackers remain under Apache 2.0. The Community Edition is intended for testing and evaluation. In the private managed cloud model the pipeline runs in the customer's own cloud account, so a European organisation can choose where its data is processed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Snowplow

Snowplow is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Snowplow runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Snowplow is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Snowplow together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
